How to Cook Vegetarian Sinigang

Vegetarian vegetable Sinigang is going to be your next meal. Its sweet and sour flavor will give you goosebumps! Sinigang is originally cooked with pork or shrimp, but since we’re vegetarian I’ll teach you how to make it as tasty as the original one without meat. Want to know the secret? Keep reading and I’ll teach you how to cook vegetarian Sinigang!

Total Cooking Time: 30 Minutes

Serving Portion: 2-3 People

Soup Ingredients:

  • Tamarind or Sinigang Powder Mix – 1 bowl of tamarind or 1 large pack of powder mix
  • Onion – 1-2 pieces
  • Garlic – 4 cloves
  • Kangkong – a handful or two bowls of kangkong
  • Sitaw – 1 or ½ bowl cut into tiny pieces
  • Black pepper – 1 tbsp.
  • Masala or Cumin Powder – 2 tbsp.
  • Cooking Oil – 3 tbsp.
  • Potatoes – 3 medium potatoes cut into blocks (optional)
  • Carrots – 3 pieces cut into bits (optional)

Meat Substitute Ingredients:

  • Tofu – 3 blocks cut into bite-size pieces
  • Masala or Cumin Powder – 2 tbsp.
  • Cooking Oil – 1-2 cups

Instructions:

For Meat Substitute

  1. Cut the tofu into tiny bite-size pieces. 
  2. Fry the tofu until crispy. Then, sprinkle some cumin. 
  3. Leave the tofu to dry on a towel or kitchen tissue.

For Soup

  1. Put 2-3 tbsp. of oil on the pot and heat it.
  2. Pour in cut onion and garlic. Sauté until onion becomes pale. (If you don’t want to add extra oil to your soup, you can also just boil the onion and garlic).
  3.  Put 5 cups of water and let boil.
  4. Put potatoes and carrots. Boil for 5 minutes. 
  5. Pour in tamarind. Boil for 10 minutes or Pour in Sinigang powder mix and mix until the water turns brown.
  6. Put in Sitaw until Sitaw becomes a little bit tender. 
  7. Then, add Kangkong and let boil for about 5 minutes.

Final Presentation:

  1. Pour soup into the bowl first.
  2. Then, put fried tofu on top.

It’s so easy, eh?! That’s it! This is so delicious when you eat it with brown rice. You can also add crispy fried eggplant to make it even more mouth-watering!

Can you put potatoes in sinigang?

Yes, of course, you can put potatoes in sinigang. As you can see in our recipe we added potatoes in our sinigang. It’s delicious. Happy cooking.
